2006 Convention Workshops
It will be hard not to learn something new at the Convention as we are offering seven workshops.
In the Smart Growth and Community Development workshop you will learn, not just how sprawl reinforces racial segregation and impedes community development but learn about the strategies two CDCs are using to counter the social and economic costs of sprawl and to strengthen the economic vitality of their communities.
In Engaging People in Advocacy, participants will take an issue from MACDC's 2007 campaign and work with each other to create compelling messages to mobilize their neighbors and influence legislators.
You can view and discuss "The House We Live In" an episode of "Race - The Power of an Illusion," a documentary that asks, If race is not biology, what is it? This episode uncovers how race resides not in nature but in politics, economics and culture, and how racism has impacted U.S. housing policy for decades. It reveals how our social institutions "make" race by disproportionately channeling resources, power, status and wealth to white people.
In the Racial Wealth Divide, participants will explore how racial economic inequality is shaped by government policies and subsidies. Drawing on participants - family histories, the workshop reveals governmental actions that boosted white families, while keeping people of color on an economic treadmill.
You can learn what barriers keep immigrants from fully participating in their communities and how to overcome those obstacles in Working with Immigrants in Your Community. Stories are a tremendous resource for community-based organizations. Most community efforts use stories to build relationships, to connect with others, and to advocate for themselves.
Digital Story Telling & Multimedia Organizing will teach participants some basic media skills that can capture and represent the images and voices behind these stories.
Young people and adults will learn how to come together to build stronger community in Two Sides: Youth and Adults Building Communities Together.
