Convention 2006

The 3rd Biennial MACDC Convention: "United Communities, Building Together" included something for everyone! Over 700 community leaders and friends came together to unite the communities in Massachusetts to build toward a better future. A performance by Fresh Effect, a hip hop dance group from Lawrence CommunityWorks, opened the day with an energetic dance performance. Xavier De Sousa Briggs, author of The Geography of Opportunity: Race and Housing Choice in Metropolitan America, gave the keynote speech. The convention featured 7 workshops, exploring topics such as Smart Growth, Advocacy, Immigration and Youth and Adult Building Communities Together. In the afternoon session, highlights included the CDC Roll Call, MACDC Community Development Awards and a gubernatorial forum moderated by Pam Cross. The gubernatorial candidates who participated: Grace Ross, Deval Patrick, and Christy Mihos (Kerry Healey declined our invitation) committed to raising the housing bond cap which funds the creation of affordable housing and to provide $2 million annually to community based small business programs.
