"As many of you know, because I talk about it all the time, I was born and raised in Syracuse, NY. In 1969, the City of Syracuse established a voluntary busing program to bus middle class white kids to an all-black school. My parents, long time supporters of the civil rights movement had to make a choice - should they enroll me and my older brother in the program or not? This was, of course, one year after Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy had been shot. Many were frustrated or even disillusioned. It would have been easy to give up; to say not us, not now, not my kids. But my parents decided to send us."

"I attended the school from first grade until fourth grade. There were good days and bad days, but in the end it was a defining experience for me. I learned about race and poverty, about differences and similarities. A seed was planted in my mind that helped me to make my own choice years later when I graduated from Northeastern University Law School and decided to find a job that would contribute to the fight against racism and poverty. And that is why I came to work at MACDC."

MACDC's 25th Anniversary

25th anniversary

On the bright morning of November 16, 2007, next to the Boston Harbor, MACDC held its 25th Anniversary Celebration at the Institute of Contemporary Art. Over 200 CDC staff and board members, friends and allies came together to hear the story of how MACDC was started, celebrate its accomplishments and support its future work in making Massachusetts communities strong and resilient.

Margaret Harrison of Bank of New York/Mellon and Ken Wade of Neighborworks America were honored for their leadership on behalf of community economic development. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino thanked MACDC and its members for helping to make Boston a better city and declared November 16, 2007 "MACDC Day" in the city of Boston. President Joe Kriesberg gave a speech in which he spoke about the many challenges and opportunities facing the field and how those who support community development - policy makers, investors, funders, and friends - can help the field move forward into the future.

MACDC also recognized Pat Libby who led MACDC from 1986 to 1994 and built MACDC into a national leader and Marc Draisen who led MACDC from 1994 to 2002. Mr. Draisen shared his thoughts on the history of MACDC and his hopes for its future. Former State Representative Mel King was also in attendance and was thanked for his role in helping to create the CDC movement in Massachusetts.

While the event was fun and celebratory it was also widely acknowledged how much still needs to be done and that MACDC will play a critical role in helping its members address the pressing needs of Massachusetts neighborhoods.
